Press Release Regarding the Attacks against the Ottoman Monuments

Republic Of Türkiye Ministry Of Foreign Affairs 12.10.2014

No: 319, 12 October 2014

After learning that an attack had been perpetrated against Karamanlı Ahmet Pasha Mosque in Tripoli, our Ministry as well as the Turkish Consulate General in Misrata which continues its activities in Libya intervened with Libyan authorities and requested that necessary measures be taken to avoid attacks against the Ottoman monuments.

We learnt with deep sorrow that unidentified persons attacked yesterday Turgut Reis Tomb and Osman Pasha Madrasa in Tripoli. We strongly condemn these attacks perpetrated against sacred sites symbolizing the historical ties of friendship and brotherhood between the peoples of Turkey and Libya.

We pursue our demarches with the Libyan authorities in order to ensure that necessary measures are taken as soon as possible to protect the historical monuments which constitute the common cultural heritage of the Turkish and Libyan peoples and that necessary sensitivity is displayed regarding this matter.
